A keyboard is a computer accessory, which is used for typing. It is basically a set of typewriter, which contains keys that enables you to enter data through a computer. The keyboards are more likely an electric-typewriter keyboard but it contain additional keys. The keys on a computer keyboard are of three categories: the alphanumeric keys, which are the letters and numbers, the punctuation keys such as comma, period, semicolon etc and the special keys like the function keys, control keys, arrow keys, Caps Lock key etc. Apart from these basic keys, IBM keyboards have other keys like Page Up, Page Down, Home, End, Insert, Pause, Num Lock, Scroll Lock, Break, Caps Lock, Print Screen and so on.
The most popular keyboard, in which the first six keys on the top row of letters spell QWERTY, is QWERTY keyboard, which has a standard layout of letters, numbers, and punctuation. This keyboard was designed in the 1800s for mechanical typewriters as well as for slow typists. On the contrary, Dvorak keyboard was designed for fats typing. There is actually no standard computer keyboard, however, there are actually three different types of PC keyboards, for example, the original PC keyboard with 84 keys; the AT keyboard again with 84 keys; and the enhanced keyboard with 101 keys. These three keyboards differ in the arrangement of function keys, the Control key, the Return key, and the Shift keys as well. A modern keyboard, no matter what type is it, contains almost the same keys.
